This webinar on 8 December will explore teaching and learning strategies which promote teachers understanding of how they can teach about controversial issues in ways that promote critical analysis. Effectively addressing controversial issues will also help to challenge misinformed views and perceptions amongst pupils, challenge commonly held ‘myths’ and build understanding and appreciation about others.

Course Outline
This webinar will be practical and will focus on:
- Confidence to promote honesty about pluralist views
- How schools can provide safe spaces for their young people to discuss openly issues that concern them
- Exploring tools that can be used to debate fundamental moral and human rights principles
- Teaching strategies that promote open respectful dialogue including questioning techniques to open up safe debate
- How teachers can help develop these skills in young people
- Exploring bias
- Promoting skills for democratic participation
- Developing pupils’ conceptual knowledge about rights and responsibilities, government and democracy and identities and communities
