RESTORE Pilot Course for Primary Schools
This term Jackie Zammit, Director of Programmes at PeaceMakers have piloted a RESTORE course with two Year 5 classes in 2 schools. RESTORE is a framework developed by a group of restorative practitioners during lockdown which is being well used by schools and organisations to reflect on experiences during the pandemic. The letters form an acronym which we have been using as a tool to help explore our responses to any challenging situation.
Lots of learning has emerged. In particular children have welcomed the idea that REST gives us an opportunity to stop and reflect and that ORE gives us a chance to dig deep and find something meaningful in challenging circumstances. If you would like to book a RESTORE course for your own school, Jackie would love to hear from you.
With children she has been using the framework in Peacemaker circles to explore:
R – Recognition – Recognising that people may respond to the same situation in different ways.
E – Empathy – Acknowledging that others may have similar and different emotional responses
S – Safety – Understanding that emotional safety is as important as physical safety
T – Tension – Understanding what happens in the brain when we are angry and/or anxious
O – Opportunity – Finding opportunities for change that can emerge from difficult situations
R- Relationships – Identifying who is in our support network and the qualities of healthy friendships
E – Engagement – Stepping into action
